Hermia Parks, Director of the Riverside County Department of Public Health’s Public Health Nursing/Maternal Child Adolescent Health Branch, describes the new Healthier Living Program for Seniors that is available to seniors, especially those with chronic health problems like diabetes and asthma, to improve their quality of life. The program features seven weekly classes that offer information on healthy living, nutritious cooking demonstrations and exercise. Participants are encouraged to create an action plan, with goals for the week to follow a healthier lifestyle. The classes are currently offered at the Janet Goeske and Stratton senior centers in Riverside, but they will expand into other parts of Riverside County this fall. Seniors can also request a home visit by a public health nurse or student nurses.
