Some are calling Kellie Pickler’s freestyle performance during Monday night’s finale on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ the best dance ABC’s show has seen throughout all 16 seasons.
Dancing to the song “Beneath Your Beautiful” by Labrinth featuring Emeli Sande, the performance was mesmerizing and capable of even making critics shed a tear.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba could barely hold herself together when trying to grasp the amount of emotion that was before her eyes during the performance. She then emotionally hugged Pickler and said, “Kelli, you just bared your soul on the dance floor and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.” Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli were equally emotionally expressive.
Thereafter, Judge Len Goodman also commented on the performance saying, “Good dancing engages the brain, great dancing engages the heart.” He then gave the performance a standing ovation.
Tom Bergeron, the DWTS host, said in a playful comment to Tonioli, “If he gives you a seven tonight, I’ll kill him myself.”
Pickler’s partner Derek Hough struggled with deciding the direction he wanted to take the freestyle dance. He pondered whether or not he wanted to use theatrics or use challenging physical moves. In all, he decided to go with the more natural and physical moves; having Pickler hold difficult moves leaning past a 45 degree angle and doing a 12-second spin never letting her feet touch the floor.
The duo made the dance look effortless and made the audience divulge into this emotional relationship as if they were a real life couple that was falling in and out of love. Each move was graceful, while their facial expressions told a story of heartbreak. Both Hough and Pickler broke out into tears once the performance was over as if they were still the characters involved in this relationship or perhaps they knew they had delivered the dance of their lives.
Of the four finalists, Pickler and Hough are one point behind Zandaya and Val Chmerkovskiy, who are in the lead. Third place is Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas following in fourth place is Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff.
Zendaya, a 16-year-old Disney sensation, seems to be the only true competition for Pickler going into tonight’s result show. In comparison, Zendaya’s fan base has proven to be just as dedicated as Pickler’s fan base, which makes the competition even more intense.
Zendaya may be in the lead, but none of her performances were as memorable as Pickler’s impeccable freestyle.
