Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind”: Musical Insights

In the “Musical Insights” series, country artists share their thoughts on some of their most popular tunes.

Written by Lori McKenna, “Humble and Kind” is a song that’s been resonating with a lot of people, including the artist who introduced it to the masses via his album Damn Country Music, Tim McGraw.

“It’s one of those things that, when you first hear a song like that, which is unbelievable, your first thought is, ‘Man, what a great message to the world, what a great message for people to hear, what a great message for your kids to hear,'” Tim says in audio provided by the Big Machine Label Group.

“And then the more you listen to it, the more you get into it, the more you start figuring out how you want to record it, how you want it to feel when you’re singing it, it becomes really a lot more introspective than you realize,” Tim continues. “You look in the mirror a lot more and you look at yourself. It’s one of those things that you need to try to live up to yourself.

“And it’s not about just saying, ‘Here, here’s what you need to try to do.’ It’s about saying, ‘this is what I need to try to do’. And I think that’s what connects with people as much as anything- is that it’s a reflective song in a lot of ways on what you need to do with yourself.”
