Pursuit Through Riverside Overnight Leads To Officer Involved Shooting

Early Friday morning a pursuit through Riverside ended when police shot at the suspects vehicle as it backed over a patrol car.

The Press Enterprise reports it’s still uncertain whether any of the fired shots from the officer’s resulted in the suspect being injured because the suspect wound up getting away.

Officer Ryan Railsback said at about 1:35 a.m. Friday morning a Riverside police officer attempted to stop a pickup truck near the intersection of Alessandro Boulevard and Barton Road. The truck didn’t stop instead the suspect sped off prompting a high-speed pursuit.

It was at some point after the chase carried into the Woodcrest area then out of the city that officers lost the suspect for a moment. It wasn’t too long before another patrol car, with two officers inside picked up the chase.

Officer Railsback reports that the pickup finally stopped in the northern Mead Valley area near the intersection of Nandina Avenue and Alexander Street.

It was after the officers pulled their patrol car up behind the truck that the suspect put the vehicle in reverse. “The suspect’s vehicle accelerated and struck and drove over the top of the police car,” Railsback said.

As the truck backed up over the front of the police vehicle that’s when either one or both of the officers fired shots at the driver. The suspect then sped off.

The impact of the truck left the officers vehicle disabled and they weren’t able to follow the suspect. Neither of the officers sustained any injuries.

Deputies searched for the truck, but weren’t able to find it and it’s reportedly not known as of yet if the truck was stolen.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s and Police Department investigated the scene of the shooting and Officer Railsback said the official reason shots were fired is all part of that investigation.
