Authorities Continue To Investigate Deadly Shooting Of 2 Palm Springs Police Officers

Three Palm Springs police officers were shot Saturday after responding to a domestic disturbance call. Two officers were killed and one is recovering at home.

The two fatally shot police officers, 63 year-old Jose Gilbert Vega, who was ready to retire and a 35-year veteran police officer and 27 year-old Lesley Zerebny, a new mom back from maternity leave, were among the first to respond to a domestic disturbance call in the 2700 block of Cypress Avenue.

Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said after arriving on scene the officers attempted to negotiate with an agitated man by asking him to step outside his residence. Police say the suspect instead starting shooting at them from behind the closed front door.

CBS Los Angeles reports according to police, the third officer, whose identity is not being released as of yet, is doing well at this time.

Both Officers Lesley Vega and Jose Zerebny were pronounced dead at the scene.

After a long standoff at the home, authorities were finally able to arrested John Felix, 26, of Palm Springs.

John Felix was arrested and booked on two counts of murder on a peace officer.

On Thursday he is scheduled to be arraigned in Riverside.

An investigation continues as to the motive for the deadly shootings.
