San Bernardino, CA (CBS RIVERSIDE) – Jack Brown, Executive Chairman of Stater Bros. Markets passed away on Sunday (Nov. 13).
Brown served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Stater Bros. Markets for 35 years and as Chairman for over 30 years. He became the Executive Chairman after appointing Pete Van Helden to President and CEO this year.
“Grief is not a strong enough word to describe what the Stater Bros. Family feels,” Van Helden said in a statement.
Brown’s long list of accolades include a 2004 “Friend of the Veteran Award,” given from the Riverside National Cemetery’s Veteran’s Advisory Committee for his support of volunteer services to veterans. He also received the “Patriot Award” in 2011, the highest award the Congressional Medal of Honor Society can give an individual.
In 1992, Brown received the “Horatio Alger Award” in recognition of his contributions to the American Dream.
In July, the California State University Board of Trustees named the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration at California State University San Bernardino.
“Jack touched every one of us in a very personal way, and it is that legacy that we must carry forward. He loved the business, his company and each one of us,” Van Helden added.
His burial will be private with a memorial to follow at a later date.
