For the first time since it opened over twenty four years ago, the Brandin’ Iron hosted a national concert on a Saturday night on December 3rd, and for the second time this year, Chase Bryant sold the legendary San Bernardino nightclub out.
However, it was hardly a repeat of the February performance, with a much different setlist, and an acoustic, rather than full-band performance. And although it was acoustic, it was anything – ANYTHING – but quiet!
Chase began his set with two songs that will presumably be included in his forthcoming full-length album, “Bad for You,” and “She Sets Me on Fire,” followed by a couple of covers that the audience knew every word to – even though they came from different genres and different generations: the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Fishin’ in the Dark” and “Closer” by the Chainsmokers.
Naturally, the high-spirited crowd at the B.I. also sang along with Chase’s first Top 3 hit, “Little Bit of You” (which Chase says was written about a girl in Chico), as well as his current single “Room to Breathe.” But another notable moment in the show came with the romantic “Change Your Name” (from his debut EP), which saw the crowd holding up the flashlights on their cell phones or coupled up, dancing. The intimacy of this acoustic show worked really well for this wedding song.
Before taking the crowd to church with a gospel-inspired version of Brooks & Dunn’s “Red Dirt Road,” Chase took a well-received moment to honor first responders, the military, and the American flag…and to hop off stage to hug a young man with Down Syndrome….who was clearly having the time of his life at the concert.
Before wrapping up the show with his debut single, “Take It On Back” (which included snippets of The Band’s “The Weight” and Ray Charles’ “I’ve Got a Woman”), Chase recalled having moved to Los Angeles at 16 years old, but confessed that he feels his career really began in the Inland Empire, when he played one of his first sold-out shows at the Brandin’ Iron back in February.
Hopefully, 2017 will be every bit as good to Chase as 2016 was!
