Country music legend Randy Travis gave a Gainesville, Texas police officer a Christmas he’ll never forget this year.
According to NBC DWF, Keith Bartlett lost his prized Gibson guitar in a house fire earlier this month. While his family all made it out of the house safely, most of their possessions were lost, and Keith’s fellow law enforcement officers helped the family find temporary housing while they work on a new one.
When Randy Travis’ wife Mary heard the story on the news, she knew she wanted to help. As her husband continues to recover from a stroke he suffered several years ago, Mary has witnessed first-hand the healing power of music. “I just know how important music is and what therapy it is, especially at a time like this,” Mary says.
Bartlett and the Travis family had met before, after he’d responded to a theft on their ranch a few years prior.
Mary contacted friends at Gibson, who arranged to have a brand new guitar, just like his old one, overnighted to North Texas.
Randy, his sons, Mary, and Bartlett’s own family surprised Bartlett at the police station on Christmas Day. Hugs were exchanged, and Randy pointed to Keith’s son, holding the new guitar.
Randy autographed the guitar for Keith, and spent some time with the Gainesville officers, while Bartlett tried out his new guitar.
“Surprised isn’t even the word for it,” Bartlett says. “These are amazing people.”
