A man in Riverside has been arrested by police on suspicion of stealing a van from a mortuary with a dead body inside, and then returning it to stealing another van.
CBS Los Angeles reports it all went down at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning at the mortuary on Chicago Avenue in Riverside. According to police the keys were reportedly in the van when 24 year-old Bobby Washington stole the van.
Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback said, a mortuary employee tried to stop the suspect the second time and was almost hit by the van.
According to police, an officer pursued the suspect for two and a half miles before the suspect finally stopped and was arrested.
There was a different business owner in the same area that said someone tried to also break into his cars about the same time the mortuary van was stolen. He reported that one of his cars had a broken passenger window and that someone had wedged a screwdriver into the ignition.
Michael Barreas said, “But all these vehicles back here don’t run so he couldn’t get anything.”
The suspect, Bobby Washington, was possibly seen around that location before, but it’s not certain whether or not he was the same man who was caught on camera, using a piece of wood to break into cars.
