After making a name for themselves in the country music and bluegrass scene of their native Canada, brothers Brad and Curtis Rempel, better known as High Valley, brought their first-ever headlining tour to the Brandin’ Iron in San Bernardino Friday night (3/3).
Their rural upbringing allowed them to hone their musicianship from an early age; their virtuosity evident in their set, which included every song from their major label debut album, Dear Life, as well as a few previously recorded tunes, like the poignant “A Father’s Love (The Only Way He Knew How).”
Their version of John Michael Montgomery‘s “Be My Baby Tonight” served as a vehicle for a dance competition, and their inclusion of a snippet from Nitty Gritty Dirt Band‘s “Fishin’ in the Dark” during their song “County Line” was also well-received. Songs like “Roads We’ve Never Taken” and their ethereal take on the traditional “I’ll Fly Away” showcased the duo’s harmonies.
They noted that they’d imagined all of California to be similar to the hectic Los Angeles, but found the pace of the Inland Empire to not be that much different from their native Alberta, and joked that perhaps they’d move to the area after all.
Graciously acknowledging the support of K-Frog and its fans, they concluded their performance with “Make You Mine,” their debut single on the U.S. charts, before following it up with the title track to their current album, “Dear Life,” comparing the song to writing in a journal.
Opening the show was Oregon’s Jackson Michelson, whose acoustic set was full of energy and promise, especially with his single, “The Good Life,” a vicarious look at being on vacation, at a time when the singer-songwriter could not afford to go on vacation.
Afterwards, the brothers took pictures and signed autographs for attendees, selling out every single piece of merchandise they’d brought, forcing them to fly in new merch for Saturday night’s show in San Diego.
