Sesame Street has a new muppet with a special message.
Sesame Street is set to have a new muppet. Julia will shortly be introduced on the show. Her character will also bring to light the issue of autism. Julia’s character has been in the works for years. Sesame Street writer Christine Ferraro said,”It’s tricky because autism is not one thing, because it is different for every single person who has autism. There is an expression that goes, ‘If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.'”
Stacey Gordon will be the puppeteer in charge of Julia. She has first hand experience with autism. Her son is autistic. Gordon explains the importance of a character like Julia,”It’s important for kids without autism to see what autism can look like. Had my son’s friends been exposed to his behaviors through something that they had seen on TV before they experienced them in the classroom, they might not have been frightened. They might not have been worried when he cried. They would have known that he plays in a different way and that that’s OK.”
Ferraro hopes Julia will not get labeled as “Julia, the kid on Sesame Street who has autism,” but rather “just Julia.”
