The Josh Abbott Band may be well-established as a Texas country group, but Southern California still managed to sell out the Parish at the House of Blues in Anaheim Sunday night (March 26th).
For his setlist on the “Live It While You Got It” tour, Josh included his latest #1 single from the Texas Regional Radio Chart, “Live It While You Got It” (which he describes as being a true story about skinny dipping on the Texas Tech campus while he was a student there), the first song he ever recorded: the provocative “Taste,” and the first single from a new album coming out in August: “Flaw.”
Historically, Josh has not performed cover songs while on tour, but for this one, he included his versions of George Strait‘s “Give It Away” (penned by Jamey Johnson), Garth Brooks‘ “Callin’ Baton Route” (performed by bassist James Hertless), and Mel McDaniel‘s “Louisiana Saturday Night.”
He brought superb opening act William Clark Green back on stage for his version of Adam Hood’s “I’ll Sing About Mine” (JAB banjo player Austin Davis played double-duty – performing with both WCG and Josh Abbott), and, after commenting, “This really is an all-ages show!”, invited an elementary-school aged young lady named Sarah on stage for the final chorus of “She’s Like Texas,” making not only her night, but probably her entire life.
Throughout the evening, but particularly on “She’s Like Texas,” fiddle player Preston Wait shined.
Josh performed an acoustic, solo version of “Touch,” which he dedicated to military serving overseas, before culminating the evening with (arguably) his most popular songs: “Oh, Tonight,” “Wasn’t That Drunk,” and the deeply personal “Amnesia,” making it a night the audience will not soon forget.
