Earth Day is coming up this weekend. Here are some great ways to celebrate with your kids.
Earth Day happens every year on April 22nd. This year it lands on a Saturday, which is a great excuse to celebrate with the family. Earth Day is typically celebrated by demonstrating support for environmental protection. Here are some great things to do with the kids to celebrate this Saturday.
- Plant A Tree
Here’s a cool tidbit about planting a tree: “a tree generates $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water, and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion. It also provides shade that keeps homes and cities cooler!” (credit: rustletheleaf.com)
2. Clean The Beach
Make it a beach day, but while you’re there do something for Earth Day. Set up some time to clean the beach. This will keep pollution out of the water and prevent animals from ingesting the trash.
3. Ride Your Bike
If you need to run and errand and it’s close, ride your bike. Get the kids all suited up with their safety gear and head out for a ride. This will reduce pollution that would typically come from your car.
Hopefully your home is already recycling, but take the family to the recycle center to turn it in. The kids can then see the amount of product at the recycle center, plus they’ll witness the environmental and monetary benefit from recycling. If you don’t recycle, create a recycle plan with the family.
5. Start a Garden
Set up a garden at your home. You’ll get to experience the benefit of fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Plus it’s great for the soil. The kids will love it, because they can play in the dirt.
