According to a Riverside Fire Department official, on Sunday night at least 200 people were evacuated from the Riverside Walmart on Van Buren Boulevard for almost an hour after a fight involving pepper spray broke out.
Fire Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst said that during the incident one person used pepper spray inside the store and the aerosol affected other customers.
The Press Enterprise reports the people involved in the fight left the store and only one person needed minor medical treatment.
About 9:09 p.m. Sunday, the incident was reported and reportedly in about 20 minutes the store was evacuated. Riverside County health officials were contacted by the city’s hazardous materials captain, and they advised on clean- up methods, Vanderhorst said.
Store officials were asked to clean the area where the happened and to remove products affected by the spray. About 10 p.m. the store was reopened.
