In the “Musical Insights” series, country artists share their thoughts on some of their most popular tunes.
Rascal Flatts has announced their next single will be the title track of their latest album Back to Us, and while Gary LeVox says “Back to Us” is “basically about waking up in a stranger’s bed,” it’s not about a one-night stand.
“It’s a guy that has very great self-awareness about himself that he’s been screwing up for a long, long time and he’s not been himself,” his bandmate Jay DeMarcus continues in a statement from the trio’s label. “And it’s about him coming full circle and saying ‘I’m so sorry that I’ve screwed up for so long, and I know you feel like you’ve been sleeping with a stranger and not the man you fell in love with,’ and his willingness to go, ‘Tomorrow it’s going to be a brand new day because you’re not going to be waking up in a stranger’s bed anymore. We’re gonna get back to us.’”
“It’s one of my favorites on the record, honestly,” Jay shares. “It’s just such a honest lyric.”
