Many of us are still reeling from the horrific events that happened in Las Vegas at the Route 91 Harvest Festival Sunday night (October 1), and are now wondering, “Where do we go from here?”, “How do I cope with this?”, and “What do I tell my kids?”
I spoke with Jennifer Villareal, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with undergrad and graduate degrees in Counseling from California Baptist University, who offered some very practical and compassionate advice.
Villareal noted that whatever emotions one is feeling right now – sadness, shock, anger – that those are all very normal to experience, but she also encouraged people who become overwhelmed and unable to function to seek help. She also made suggestions as to how we can explain this tragedy to children – both young kids and adolescents and teenagers, noting the difficulty in trying to explain something that we don’t fully comprehend ourselves.
